10 Things to Do Near the South Rim (That Aren’t the Canyon)

We all know the Grand Canyon is the star of the show, but what if you want a little more adventure (or a break from the crowds)? If you’re staying at Highland Grand Canyon or just exploring the South Rim, here are 10 awesome things to do nearby that aren’t staring into the abyss (literally).

1. Take a Scenic Drive Through Kaibab National Forest (Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni National Monument)

Right outside your tent at Highland, forest roads wind through towering pines and meadows full of wildflowers. No crowds, no fees, just nature…and the added bonus? Guests at Highland get to drive right through Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni National Monument on their way in and out. It’s like a scenic detour built into your stay.

2. Catch a Movie at the Grand Canyon IMAX in Tusayan

This 35-minute film gives you a bird’s-eye view of the canyon's geology and history, and lets you sit down in air conditioning.

3. Visit the Tusayan Museum & Ruins

A quick stop along Desert View Drive, this small site offers a glimpse into Ancestral Puebloan life with a short interpretive trail.

4. Stargaze at Highland

With zero light pollution and plenty of open sky, Highland is a stargazer’s dream. Each tent offers unobstructed views of the night sky right from your private deck. In our communal area, guests can use the complimentary telescope for an even closer look at the stars, planets, and occasional meteor shower. Whether you’re a seasoned sky-watcher or just soaking in your first glimpse of the Milky Way, the stargazing here is unforgettable.

5. Watch Wildlife from Your Deck

Elk, deer, ravens, and sometimes even wild turkeys roam the area. Grab a coffee and watch the forest wake up.

6. Take a Horseback Ride at Grand Canyon Trail Rides

Saddle up for a scenic ride through the pines! Grand Canyon Trail Rides offers one-hour and two-hour horseback rides along forested trails just south of the park. It’s a classic Western experience that adds a little cowboy magic to your canyon adventure.

7. Check Out the Grand Canyon Railway Depot in the Park

One of the oldest operating depots in the country, it’s a throwback to the golden age of national park tourism.

8. Grab Dinner in Tusayan

Local spots like Plaza Bonita and We Cook Pizza and Pasta offer good food and easy access back to Highland afterward.

9. Visit Shoshone Point (If You Know, You Know)

This lesser-known overlook is perfect for a picnic, and it’s one of the few South Rim spots you might get all to yourself. It’s about a one-mile, mostly flat walk from the trailhead to the point, making it an easy and rewarding adventure with panoramic canyon views at the end.

Yes, we know this list was supposed to be "everything except the Canyon," but come on... have you seen Shoshone Point? We couldn’t resist.

10. Play Cornhole and Roast Marshmallows at Camp

Sometimes the best part of the trip is slowing down. Highland’s shared firepit and outdoor games make it easy to unwind.

Book your stay at Highland and experience all the hidden gems the South Rim has to offer. The Grand Canyon is just the beginning.
