Stargazing at Highland: A Grand Canyon Dark Sky Experience

The Grand Canyon is stunning by day, but it’s what happens after sunset that truly takes your breath away. At Highland, we’re lucky to be in one of the darkest regions in the Southwest, offering an unforgettable stargazing experience right from your tent.

No Lights, No Problem

We’re pretty remote, which means no city glow, no streetlights, and no light pollution. All of our lighting is dark sky compliant, so even our path lights and tent lamps won’t interfere with the night views. With our location nestled in the forest just outside the South Rim, you’ll experience the kind of night sky that makes you feel small in the best way possible.

Stargazing from Your Tent

Each safari-style tent at Highland is designed to connect you with the outdoors. Whether you’re relaxing on your private deck or peeking out the screened windows before bed, the stars are always in view. Guests often report seeing satellites glide silently across the sky, catching meteor showers, or spotting a brilliant shooting star without ever leaving their deck. And the best part? You don’t have to share the moment with a crowd, it’s your private window into the universe. Some guests even set alarms just to catch the Milky Way drifting overhead.

The Telescope Everyone Can Use

In our communal area, you’ll find a shared telescope available to all guests. Whether you're spotting constellations, planets, or the occasional shooting star, it’s the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring the Canyon. Not sure what you’re looking at? We recommend downloading a stargazing app ahead of time! Our favorite is SkyView. download here -> https://apps.apple.com/us/app/skyview/id404990064

Best Times for Stargazing

  • New Moon nights are ideal. No moonlight means maximum visibility.

  • Summer months offer warm weather and dazzling views of the Milky Way.

  • Fall and spring bring crisp skies and fewer crowds.

Bonus: No Alarm Needed

The beauty of stargazing at Highland is that you don’t have to go far or stay up late. Just step outside your tent, breathe in the fresh pine air, and look up. Some nights, the stars are so bright you’ll think they’re close enough to touch.

Reviews From the Stargazers

“I had an amazing stay! Hosts were friendly, responsive, and their instructions were very clear. The place itself was perfect for visiting the Grand Canyon + the stars at night took my breath away. The hosts made everything super easy (including how they set up the fire pit for guests ahead of time). I would definitely come back!”

“The site itself was stunning, nestled in nature with breathtaking views. But the real highlight? The night sky. I've never seen stars like that before... millions of them, so vivid and clear, it felt like I was in a dream. It was peaceful, private, and the perfect escape."
