Where to Eat Near the South Rim: A Local’s Guide

After a long day of hiking, sightseeing, and soaking in canyon views, you’ll want a good meal and maybe a cold drink. While the Grand Canyon isn’t known as a foodie hotspot, there are some solid gems nearby. Whether you’re inside the park, grabbing something to-go for the trail, dining in Tusayan, or cooking at camp, here’s our local take on where to eat near the South Rim.

Inside the Park (10-15 minutes from Highland)

El Tovar Dining Room
The crown jewel of South Rim dining. Historic, elegant, and filled with canyon views. Perfect for a date night or celebratory meal, but you’ll want to make a reservation well in advance. If you’re just looking for a drink, head to the beer garden outside or the cozy lounge inside for cocktails and some truly amazing truffle fries.

Arizona Steakhouse (Bright Angel Lodge)
A relaxed atmosphere with big windows and a focus on local meats and wines. As with the El Tovar, it’s popular, so make a reservation well in advance (up to 60 days prior). If you’re a last-minute planner, go early if you want a table.

To-Go Options

If you're heading out early or planning a picnic, these are great grab-and-go spots. And honestly? The best seat in the house is anywhere along the Rim Trail or below the rim.

Grand Canyon Village Market
Located inside the park, this spot offers made-to-order sandwiches as well as a variety of pre-made options that are easy to grab and go.

Maswik Food Court
Also within the park, Maswik has a cafeteria-style setup with customizable sandwiches and salads, plus plenty of pre-packed items if you’re in a hurry.

Hermit’s Rest (at the west end of Hermit Road)
This historic outpost offers hot dogs, bottled drinks, and pre-made sandwiches. Note: vegetarian options are limited or nonexistent, so plan accordingly.

Tusayan (10-15 minutes from Highland)

Drigo’s
A local favorite for breakfast and lunch in Tusayan. Known for its hearty portions, fresh ingredients, and laid-back vibe, it’s a great way to fuel up before a day at the canyon or wind down after a morning hike.

We Cook Pizza & Pasta
It’s casual, quick, and surprisingly good. Think build-your-own pizzas, baked pasta dishes, and big salads. Bonus: they welcome dogs on the patio.

Plaza Bonita
A go-to for Mexican food in Tusayan. Big plates, margaritas, and fast service. Great for families or groups.

Stay In and Grill at Highland

Of course, there’s always the DIY route. Highland’s outdoor kitchen and grill area make it easy to cook your own dinner under the stars. Stop by the market in Village or bring groceries from Flagstaff and keep it simple: burgers, veggies, or even campfire nachos. We’ve got utensils, prep space, and picnic tables ready to go!
